Ever catch yourself thinking, “I’ll make a change once this happens” or “I’ll be happy when I …”?
It’s a common trap to set conditions on our happiness and improvements.
But what if you could start transforming your daily life right now? Dive into these simple changes that can make every day more enjoyable, no waiting required.
It’s Never Going to Be Perfect
There will never come a time when everything is perfect. You might not have your dream home, the job you always wanted, or the bank account you envisioned, but that does not mean you shouldn’t try to make every day special now.
You deserve to feel joy every day regardless of where you are in your life and regardless of where you live. Happiness is not about perfection or having everything lined up. It’s about finding joy and happiness in the small moments that happen every day.
And the best part? It doesn’t take much to make every day more enjoyable.
Think of the things that make you feel good and make you feel content or happy. A good start is to begin writing in a gratitude journal every day. When you feel grateful for what you already have, you will feel more positive and content and bring more of the things you are grateful for into your life.
Ways to Infuse Joy Into Your Day
Here are some simple ways to bring joy into your every day.
- Find time to read or write outside. Start or end your day in a cozy chair with a book or a journal. Invest in a cute, small table for tea or coffee and create your own little hideaway.
- Create a ritual. Serve your tea or coffee in your favorite mug or teacup that always makes you feel special. If you don’t have one, get one. Getting a tea or coffee cup that makes you smile is so worth it.
- Tend to your plants. Water your plants, grow favorite herbs, or plant vegetables. Growing and eating your own herbs and vegetables is very satisfying and can make every meal feel a little extra special. Bonus: it might even make you healthier and save you some money.
- Plan something to look forward to. It can be a simple dinner with friends or your next family vacation. Having something to look forward to creates excitement and breaks up the monotony of our everyday routines. And who doesn’t love to plan for a vacation or a weekend getaway.
- Go for a morning walk. Invest in a good pair of walking shoes and head out early. The feeling of having accomplished something beneficial just for you before the day begins can be a game-changer for the rest of your day. Walking is proven to boost mental health, productivity, creativity, and your overall health in general.
- Play your favorite music while doing a boring chore. Listen to a podcast or an audiobook while doing the dishes or vacuuming.
- Prep your meals on the weekend. Cooking healthy and tasty meals on the weekend makes the work week a lot easier. Is there anything more frustrating than feeling starved and not having anything to eat for lunch, forcing you to make less than stellar food choices?
- Invest in a gadget that makes life easier for you. Small, clever tools that can save you time and frustration can help improve your daily tasks for the better. A cordless vacuum, a fast electric tea kettle, or even organizational items to tame the clutter.
- Add greenery to your surroundings. Plants can really change the mood in your home. Add easy-to-care plants that also improve your air quality by helping to remove impurities in your home, like snake plants or pothos. Research shows looking at greenery reduces stress and boosts productivity.
Reward Yourself
Sometimes we need a little push to get things done. Set up a reward system for when you complete a task or project.
For example:
- When you have cleaned out the garage, you get to buy a new organizational system that could really help keep your home more organized or inviting.
- When you finish writing four chapters of your new book, you get to buy that new novel at the bookstore and enjoy a treat in the café.
- If you work from home, leaving the house during your lunch hour will break things up. Explore a new lunch spot once a week. Something new to look forward to creates a little excitement into the work week.
Making time for little moments like these in your day will automatically make you feel more joyful. Don’t wait for a big event to feel special or to do activities you enjoy.
Feeling Stuck in a Rut?
If you feel stuck in a rut, it’s time to break free.
First Step: Ask yourself why you are feeling stuck and with what exactly.
Most of us are on autopilot. We tend to do the same things day in and day out without even realizing it.
We are all creatures of habit. It feels comfortable to do the same familiar things we have always done. Our brains even want to keep us right there in our safe space. But before we know it, years have passed by, and we wonder where the heck did the time go.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Revisit Your Goals and Priorities
To break out of our autopilot mode, we have to push ourselves to try new things. Do something different. Change your routine. Put yourself out there. It does not have to be something dramatic or grand. Small changes can make a big difference.
Here are some easy ways to get started and shake things up:
- Shop in a new grocery store
- Drive a different route to work
- Try out a new restaurant
- Make a new dish you never made before
- Read a book by a new author
- Explore a new neighborhood or new park
- Sign up for a class to learn something new and to meet new peopleDon’t be so set in your ways and your routines that if a friend invites you to lunch you say no because that’s when you go grocery shopping.
Don’t be so set in your ways and your routines that if a friend invites you to lunch you say no because that’s when you go grocery shopping.
Push yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Schedules are great, but life was meant to be lived, not to follow strict schedules every minute of the day.
The longer we have stuck to a routine, the harder it will be to break out of it. It may take some time even.
But you can do it, with a little conscious effort.
Challenge yourself to do one new thing every week, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable. That’s okay. You just have to start. Start small and build up to bigger things.
- Try a new cheese or fruit – might sound ridiculous, but I can’t tell you how many people only stick to what they know.
- Go to a new restaurant.
- Explore a new hobby.
Create little “adventures” to spice up your life. You will be amazed at how adding simple new activities into your life will make you feel revitalized and more alive and joyful.
Take the first step today and do something new to start a shift in your mindset and energy.
Feeling Dissatisfied and Frustrated?
Can’t find your joy because you are feeling annoyed with yourself and with everyone else for that matter? You are busy but never seem to really get anywhere. Sure, you did the laundry, you cleaned up the house, but you feel frustrated, unfulfilled, and plain dissatisfied in general.
Those feelings of frustration can come from neglecting your goals and ignoring your priorities. Ask yourself:
- Am I working towards something meaningful?
- What are my priorities?
- What is really important to me?
- Do I even have any goals? What are they?
No matter our age, it is important to have something to work toward.
A goal does not have to be complicated or grand. It is simply working toward something that is important to you. It can be getting fit, starting that herb garden, starting your own business or finishing that book you started writing 10 years ago.
I think the older we get the more we have that nagging feeling that something is missing in our life, but we don’t always know what.
Having something that pushes us, challenges us, makes us excited to get up in the morning will change how we view our everyday life and our overall satisfaction with life in general.
Imagine Your Future Self
Picture the future version of yourself living a life full of joy and fulfillment. What would you be doing?
Traveling more? Writing every day? Learning Italian? Running your own business on your own terms?
There are no rules and there are no right or wrong answers. This is your future, your vision, your choice.
What do you seeing yourself doing? What would you like to see yourself doing?
Having joyful moments does not have to be extravagant, it just has to bring YOU joy and bring meaning into YOUR life.
End Your Day on a Good Note
Starting the day right is important but so is ending your day on a good note.
- Shut down your office if you work from home and transition into another room.
- Create a cozy ambiance for the evening.
- Sip a calming herbal tea.
- Journal your thoughts and what went well that day.
- Set the expectation for the next day.
Stay away from action movies or the news right before going to bed. I am a sucker for a good murder mystery, but some can be quite disturbing and do not provide for a peaceful good night’s sleep.
Find a feel-good movie or read a good book instead and you will sleep much better.
Put away your phone. The bright blue light from electronic devices may stimulate the circadian clock (your internal biological clock) more than traditional light sources, keeping you awake, and disrupting your sleep.
It is hard to feel joyful the next day when you are dragging your feet from lack of sleep.
Establish a good bedtime routine that gets you to bed on time and allows you to wake up refreshed and ready for what the day may bring.
It might not happen right away if you are used to staying up late, but gradually you can establish an evening routine that feels calm and relaxing that give you that good night sleep we all need to be at our best.
Final Thoughts
Joy isn’t reserved for just vacations, dream jobs, or milestones. It’s in the small moments and choices you make every single day. From morning walks to bedtime rituals, from trying new things to investing in little luxuries and in yourself, you can create a life that feels good now, not “someday.”
To get started right away: Grab a notebook and jot down three simple ideas of changes you can make in your day-to-day routines. Pick one of those ideas and commit to do it today or this week–no excuses.
Little by little, you start upgrading your life and before you know it, every day will become more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Having joyful moments does not have to be extravagant, it just have to bring YOU joy and bring meaning into YOUR life.
You deserve to feel joy every day!
